How to Sterilise Jars – Oven Method
Sterilising your jars properly is essential to keep your preserves fresh and safe. Here’s how to do it using a standard oven.
Set your oven to 130°C (270°F) – no higher, or jars may crack.
Clean jars thoroughly with hot soapy water or run them through the dishwasher. Rinse well.
Place the jars (and metal lids, if oven-safe) upright on a baking tray without touching each other.
Put the tray in the oven and heat for 20 minutes.
Leave the jars inside until you’re ready to use them. This keeps them warm — essential for hot preserves.
Fill while hot
Remove the jars carefully using oven gloves or tongs. Fill immediately with hot jam/jelly/chutney and seal.
Some plastic lids or rubber seals may not be oven-safe. These can be sterilised in boiling water for 10 minutes instead.
Always check that jars have no cracks or chips before use.
