How to Sterilise Jars – Oven Method
Sterilising your jars properly is essential to keep your preserves fresh and safe. Here’s how to do it using a standard oven.
Equipment
- Clean glass jars (washed in warm soapy water or dishwasher)
- Matching lids (check they are not rusty or damaged)
- A baking tray
- tongs or oven gloves
Instructions
- Set your oven to 130°C (270°F) – no higher, or jars may crack.
- Clean jars thoroughly with hot soapy water or run them through the dishwasher. Rinse well.
- Place the jars (and metal lids, if oven-safe) upright on a baking tray without touching each other.
- Put the tray in the oven and heat for 20 minutes.
- Leave the jars inside until you’re ready to use them. This keeps them warm — essential for hot preserves.
- Fill while hot
- Remove the jars carefully using oven gloves or tongs. Fill immediately with hot jam/jelly/chutney and seal.
Notes
Some plastic lids or rubber seals may not be oven-safe. These can be sterilised in boiling water for 10 minutes instead.
Always check that jars have no cracks or chips before use.
